There’s a comfort in being lost.
It gives us permission to do nothing, to stay in the space of uncertainty, to avoid making mistakes. We convince ourselves that if we don’t know the way forward, we can’t possibly take the wrong step. And so, we linger—waiting, wondering, circling the same thoughts over and over again.
We tell ourselves we need clarity before we can act. That something external must arrive to show us the way—a sign, a breakthrough, someone else’s approval. We pretend we are searching, but in truth, we are standing still.
Because being lost is safer than choosing.
The False Freedom of Staying Lost
When we say, “I don’t know what to do,” what we often mean is, “I don’t want to get it wrong.”
There’s a kind of false freedom in staying lost. No commitments, no risks, no responsibility. We can float, observe, and never have to fully engage. It feels open, expansive—even freeing. But in reality, it’s a cage disguised as possibility.
Because when we claim we are lost, we are still making a choice.
A choice not to step forward. A choice not to engage. A choice to remain in the safety of indecision.
Here’s the thing—being lost is an illusion.
You are not lost. You are waiting.
And beneath the waiting is fear.
Fear of what happens when you take a step and it doesn’t go the way you planned. Fear that you will make a choice and realise it wasn’t the right one. Fear of being seen in the messiness of figuring it out.
But clarity does not come from waiting. It comes from movement.
You don’t need to have the entire path mapped out.
You don’t need to be certain of every detail. You just need to decide that being lost is no longer where you are willing to stay.
Because the truth is, you were never lost to begin with. You were just afraid to trust yourself.
A New Choice: Moving Forward Without Certainty
If you feel lost right now, I invite you to pause and ask yourself—what if I do know?
What if the answer isn’t some grand, complicated revelation, but something small and simple? A tiny next step, an inner nudge you’ve been dismissing, a direction you’ve been avoiding because it feels uncomfortable?
Choosing is an act of trust. And trust is built through action.
So, what if today, instead of claiming you are lost, you simply decide?
Not for the rest of your life. Not for the next five years.
Just for today.
What would that look like?
Because the moment you choose, you are no longer lost.
You are moving. You are engaged. You are living.
And that is where freedom truly begins.

On Wadawurrung Country, stretching from the Great Dividing Range in the north to the southern coast and from the Werribee River in the east to the Surf Coast in the west, we honour the Traditional Custodians of this land, the Wadawurrung people of the Kulin Nation.
We pay our deepest respects to their Elders, past, present, and emerging, and acknowledge their enduring connection to the land, waters, and community.
We also celebrate the rich stories, culture, and traditions of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders who live and work on this land.
